“YOU’VE JUST GOT TO KNOW THE RIGHT PEOPLE” (#NEWPOETS)

23 Oct “YOU’VE JUST GOT TO KNOW THE RIGHT PEOPLE” (#NEWPOETS)

So here it is
In a country built for those
Who know the “right” people
Us “wrong” people-knowers
Who wave our diplomas
At the base of their towers
And declare our arrival
As if something more
Were promised to us
Than a debt to an institution
And a paper with calligraphy
As we wait for them
To send the elevator down
So that we might join them
And the view

But we find ourselves
Begging for similar scraps
Don’t we?
Familiar crumbs
Perhaps we all
Should have stayed at home
Continued ringing up their lattes
And bringing them their food
After all, we don’t really know them
These “right” people
They shake a different hand
They tip a different hat
Perhaps all we’ve done
By chasing their heels
Is sacrifice our seniority
As their servants

But I don’t know them
These “right” people
Who open doors and pile numbers
Who built towers and help their brothers
Just me and my wrong people
“Will that be all?”
“Extra ketchup?”
“Would you like a bag?”
“One shot or two?”
“Slippery when wet!”
“Watch your step!”
“Let me get that for you!”
Wrong people
Who must be silly to think
we could ever be “right”

And now here we are
Out front of their towers
Waving our calligraphy
Like fools
As if it suddenly made us their brother
As if they ever had any intention
Of sending the elevator down
For a stranger.
