So, I am looking to understand more about your movement/writing and composing rap backings and lyrics. I want to be an audio engineer so I am looking to understand more each individual style of music. I know you started and still do slam poetry. Is there any specific type of poetry you pull from the most for rap?

Poetry to me is just a structure for writing, like a song is a structure for writing. Both essentially are poems - done with a different set of expectations given the form choice. Just like haiku or Pantoum, its another structure that I plug what I feel I want to say into. The cadence choice is usually in response to the beat, but when one is not present like in poetry, the beat is provided by the inherent arch of a narrative which the energy corresponds with.

A good performance poem is structurally very much like a song - there is some element of repetition whether it is thematic or an actual word selection. There is an introduction of topic (1st Verse) repetition (hook) elaboration/perspective on topic (2nd verse), repetition, a getting-to-the-core-of-the-issue moment (the bridge) and  then back to the repetition of the hook to bring it full circle.

As far as content, every artist has their own Philosophy about what they need/want to say to feel fulfilled or accomplished in their objective. When I am doing music, I feel that the writing is the meat of the artistry, and so everything is mixed to showcase that content. The music is built around it, so that the lyrics are met with sounds like invoke the right emotional response to the weight of the content.

Hope that helps, my dude.  Good luck with the engineering!

What do you do when you're feeling inspired but it can't seem to translate well into paper? It's very frustrating .. it's been like a month of this

I do a different medium of expression. If I can’t write, I make a video, or do some photography, or try to help produce someone else’s idea. I think we get addicted to the notion that having inspiration to create means we have to create something from our own ideas. I try to just stay around creative people, so when I want to create something but don’t have the right project to match my ambitious mood, I can help someone else’s idea happen.

If you feel like you want to create something that comes directly from you but can’t seem to, I would say your charging up period of gathering inspiration isn’t over yet. Like I’ve always said to my students, “you’ve got to take in art to put out art. Fill your tank before you try to move an idea forward.” I don’t ALWAYS believe that that is true, but nothing gets the ideas rolling like being a fan.

Hope that was helpful!

No, no it should not have taken me this long to make this downloadable. Why did it? Because I am a perfectionist. Thank Twitter follower @barleybirchkyle for pressuring me today to put it up. Please enjoy! So many more to come, I am sitting on so many songsthat I need you to hear. Click below, or the image to download. Getback, my friends. R

“Six elements to staying in love, included in Love is a Decision, are:
Making your spouse feel truly honored.
Learning the art of touching—tenderly.
Keeping courtship alive in your marriage.
Re-opening a heart closed by anger.
Building—or rebuilding—trust in a relationship.
Becoming best friends with your family
These six elements are the keys to Love. Love is not an emotion, love is not a feeling, love is not happen-stance. Love is a Decision. Love is waking up every day committed to honoring your mate by implementing the above six keys. If you want to have a great relationship, guess what, it’s up to you.”
